Lagar Velho Rockshelter (Portugal)

2025 European Heritage Label site in Portugal

The Lagar Velho Rockshelter, located in the Lapedo Valley in central Portugal, is one of Europe’s most significant prehistoric archaeological sites. Dating to around 29,000 years ago, it is best known for the discovery of the burial of the “Lapedo Child,” one of the most important human remains ever found in Europe from the Upper Palaeolithic period.

The child’s skeleton displays a unique combination of anatomical features associated with both anatomically modern humans and Neanderthals. This discovery transformed scientific understanding of human evolution in Europe, demonstrating that interaction and interbreeding between populations played a key role in the formation of early European communities.

Lagar Velho Rockshelter represents Europe’s deep biological and cultural interconnectedness. It shows that diversity, integration and cultural exchange are not modern phenomena but foundational elements of European identity, rooted in the continent’s earliest human history.
