Places of Peace (Portugal, Spain, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia and Bulgaria)
Places of Peace is a transnational European heritage ensemble linking sites across Portugal, Spain, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia and Bulgaria where peace treaties were concluded between the 13th and 19th centuries. Together, these places bear witness to Europe’s long and complex history of conflict resolution, diplomacy and negotiated coexistence across borders.
Although rooted in diverse political, cultural and architectural contexts, the sites are united by their role in formalising peace agreements that reshaped territories, power relations and systems of governance throughout Europe. These treaties introduced principles of dialogue, compromise and legal order that gradually replaced violent confrontation as a means of resolving disputes between states and communities.
As a collective heritage site, Places of Peace illustrates peace not as a single event but as a recurring European process. The ensemble highlights the emergence of diplomacy, international law and mutual recognition as shared foundations of European history, underscoring peace as one of Europe’s most enduring and defining values.
