Provadia Salt-Production and Urban Centre (Bulgaria)

The Provadia Salt-Production and Urban Centre is repositioned through its European Heritage Label project as a key reference point for understanding Europe’s earliest economic, technological and social networks. As one of the oldest salt-production and fortified urban centres in Europe, the site demonstrates how shared resources, innovation and long-distance trade shaped early European connections.

The action plan brings clear European added value through multilingual digital interpretation, innovative use of AR and 3D visualisations, and the creation of a European-focused Visitor Centre linking salt production to the emergence of trade routes and early urban societies across the Balkans and beyond.

By developing European Salt Routes, Provadia contributes to our understanding of Europe as a space of shared origins—highlighting how cooperation, exchange and technological innovation laid the foundations of European civilisation.
