New resources for architecture professionals and policy makers to create high-quality living environments

Case studies, audio content and a multilingual toolkit now complement the report “Towards a shared culture of architecture”. These promote ideas on how we can contribute to a better living environment in a way that benefits both people and the environment.

Why quality matters

Access to quality housing, outdoor space and natural recreation are important to our existence and wellbeing. But for too long the overall objective of quality architecture has been neglected. A livable, high-quality built environment is as much about connecting people and strengthening social cohesion as it is about creating sustainable spaces for public encounters.

These are some of the key messages of the report “Towards a shared culture of architecture” compiled in 2021 by a group of experts from all over Europe.

Evaluation, guidance, inspiration

Extra resources are now available to accompany this report. They include case studies, audio content, and a multilingual toolkit.

The report

The report shows how the culture of quality architecture and living environment could be developed across Europe.

Based on information sourced from a diverse range of initiatives and guiding documents, it compiles existing trends and best practices in the governance of contemporary spatial design.

The aim is to provide recommendations at multiple levels which ensure high-quality in architecture and the built environment for everyone.

Background

The report, implementing the Council Work Plan for Culture 2019-2022, was the outcome of an expert group made up of 39 experts nominated by 23 EU countries, plus Norway and Switzerland. The European Commission coordinated the process.
