Commissioner Gabriel hosts first roundtable with representatives of the cultural and creative sectors

On Tuesday 21 February, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel presented the first of three roundtables with selected high-level representatives of the cultural and creative sectors and industries in Europe.

The objective of these roundtables is to strengthen the ecosystem of cultural and creative sectors and industries, and to enhance direct communication channels between the commissioner and stakeholders of the sector. The roundtable took place in the European Commission’s premises and focused on the challenges, opportunities and needs of the sectors.

Ahead of the meeting, Commissioner Gabriel said:

The cultural and creative sectors are very important for our societies, as they are critical to a shared sense of European identity, culture and values. In economic terms, cultural and creative sectors and industries show above-average growth and job creation – and that in particular for young people.

In her speech, commissioner Gabriel invited the participants to think about connecting the different elements of the ecosystem and how to maximize its potential. To do so in a timely manner, participants are encouraged to combine different EU instruments to achieve these ambitions and building our common future. She emphasised the leading role of innovation and digitisation in the sector.

Participants took the floor to mention the challenges they face, but also the solutions that could be implemented, such as networking opportunities, nurturing the integration of small rural areas, and embracing a new strategic vision for a pan-European cultural policy framework. Some common challenges were identified, calling for a sector-wide answer to arise from the roundtable series.
