Next EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture postponed to 2022

The European Commission and Fundació Mies van der Rohe have announced a change of calendar for the next EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award. The 2021 Prize will be postponed until 2022 due to international concern about the spread of the coronavirus.

As the jury meetings and the visits of the finalist works cannot be guaranteed at this stage, the selection process of the Prize 2022 will be divided into 2 phases:

1st phase

This will be dedicated to the first list of nominated projects, which includes those works finished between October 2018 and October 2020.

The group of independent experts and the associations of architects have already sent the proposals of candidate works to participate in what was initially to be the EU Mies Award 2021. This list will be published in January 2021.

2nd phase

This will be dedicated to the second list of nominated projects, which will include those works finished between November 2020 and April 2021.

The nominators will be asked to add other works finished between November 2020 and April 2021 to complete the second phase. The works nominated in the second phase will be announced in September 2021.

As a result, the EU Mies Award 2022 will encompass works finished between October 2018 and April 2021.

The Awards ceremony

The winners will be awarded during the EU Mies Award Day in May 2022. The day consists of the Awards ceremony, an exhibition, talks and the presentation of the catalogue. During the same week, visits to the shortlisted works will also take place.

A travelling exhibition will begin in June 2022.

Background

The principal objectives of the Prize are to recognise and commend excellence and innovation in the field of architecture.

The Prize also wants to highlight the important contribution of European architects to the sustainable development and transformation of Europe’s built environment.
