European Heritage Days 2025 celebrate architecture across Europe

European Heritage Days return with thousands of free events across Europe. The focus in 2025 is on how built spaces connect Europe’s past with a more inclusive, sustainable future.

The theme of the 2025 edition of the European Heritage Days (EHD) is “Architectural Heritage: Windows to the Past, Doors to the Future”. It explores how Europe’s built heritage can illuminate a shared past and inspire more inclusive, sustainable communities for the future.

Architecture, from medieval landmarks to social housing, industrial structures to contemporary eco-design, reflects Europe’s cultural diversity, creativity, and resilience. These spaces shape identity, memory, and belonging.

Everyone is encouraged to join events, support communities, and inspire the next generation of heritage creators. Thousands of events across Europe, including tours, exhibitions, workshops, performances, and digital experiences, will engage people of all ages.

About the initiative

EHD is a joint initiative that started in 1985 by the Council of Europe and co-organised with the European Union since 1999.

In line with the European Cultural Convention, events take place in all 48 participating states between August-November of each year. During this time, monuments and sites open their doors, offering free access and opportunities to explore shared heritage.

The initiative aims to bring people together across languages and cultures, celebrating shared values and fostering a sense of belonging.

Initiatives like the EHD Stories microgrants, the European Youth Heritage Makers Competition and synergies with the European Heritage Label, support grassroots cultural projects.

In 2024, over 21 million people joined over 51 000 events across 42 countries, making EHD Europe’s most participatory cultural event.
