This European Capital of Culture took place in the unique context of the Cold War when West Berlin became an island of Culture surrounded by the Berlin wall. Celebrations were held to mark the 250. anniversary of Goethe’s birth, the 240. anniversary of Schiller’s birth and the 80. anniversary of the Weimar Constitution. Numerous sites and buildings were also added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
