Role and duties of the EHL Experts

Roles and duties are described in detail in the legal decision establishing a European Union action for the European Heritage Label (Decision 1194/2011/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council).

European Heritage Label – background Information

Decision 1194/2011/EU establishes a Union action for the European Heritage Label (EHL) for the years 2011 to 2025.

This label highlights sites which have played a significant role in the history, culture and development of the European Union. The ultimate objective of the EHL is to strengthen people’s sense of belonging to the European Union and to strengthen intercultural dialogue.

By 2022, the European selection panel awarded the European Heritage Label to 60 sites in 22 countries. These sites carry forward an inclusive, people-centred and value-based definition of, and approach to cultural heritage.

Each site is expected to develop and carry activities that raise awareness of their role in the history and culture of Europe and/or the building of the European Union.

With the attribution of the European Heritage Label, selected heritage sites become part of a renowned and prestigious network that have shaped the history of Europe. European Heritage Label sites invite visitors, especially young people, to discover all types of cultural heritage from a European perspective.

The European Heritage Label is different from other initiatives in the field of cultural heritage, such as the UNESCO World Heritage List, the UNESCO Conventions on Intangible Cultural Heritage or the Council of Europe’s Cultural Routes. This is because it puts

  • the symbolic value of the site before the beauty or architectural quality of the site
  • emphasis on the activities and educational dimension, especially for young people, the safeguarding and conservation of the sites

Note: this page was updated on 10 January to remove the phrase "Public servants and representatives affiliated to national and European institutions are not eligible to participate in this call."
