Creative Europe and ICCROM organise training on safeguarding cultural heritage in crisis

Are you a passionate mid-career professional working to protect cultural heritage from the increasing threats of disasters, extreme weather events, and conflicts?
We encourage you to apply in the link below before 20 April for a two-week training on disaster risk management for movable and living heritage in Latvia.
This advanced training is part of the READY – Safeguarding Cultural Heritage from Disasters, Extreme Weather Events, and Complex Emergencies project, funded by Creative Europe in partnership with the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM).
The training provides technical expertise and practical tools to equip professionals with interdisciplinary methods for safeguarding cultural heritage during crises, based on ICCROM’s First Aid and Resilience for Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis (FAR) programme.
The training will consist of both online and in-person sessions, followed by 6 months-long field projects.
Over the course of the two-week training, participants will gain:
- Technical expertise and proficiency in risk assessment, emergency stabilization, and safeguarding movable and living heritage
- Access to ICCROM’s ISO-standard, field-tested methodologies and digital tools for post-disaster damage and risk assessments
- Knowledge-sharing with cultural heritage experts, civil protection professionals, and risk management specialists
- Support in developing and implementing a 6-month field project within your institution to enhance heritage resilience
Eligibility
Applicants are invited from diverse professional backgrounds who are interested in this unique and extensive training and those who wish to make a difference by protecting at-risk heritage and serving their respective communities.
Participants must be from countries participating in the Creative Europe programme.
In particular, the course may be of interest to people with the following background:
- Professionals working to safeguard living traditions, knowledge, and practices, as well as heritage collections in diverse settings (museums, libraries, archives, archaeological or living heritage sites)
- Cultural bearers and community leaders who are committed to safeguarding at-risk movable and living heritage
- Professionals working in fields such as civil protection, disaster risk management, climate change adaptation, fire risk management, and emergency response
Preference will be given to applicants who:
- have full support from their employing institutions or local authorities to implement post-training field projects
- have prior experience in successfully safeguarding movable and living heritage following a disaster or conflict
Application guidelines
To apply, please complete all mandatory fields in the online application form. In the application form, you will be required to identify a heritage collection, an intangible heritage element, or a combination of both, which will serve as your case study.
Expected timeline after submission
Preliminary selection will be finalised by 30 April 2025. Those selected will be invited for an online interview during the first week of May 2025.
