Launched in 2000, the Culture 2000 programme ran until 2006, with a budget of €236.4 million dedicated to promoting a common cultural area, characterised by its cultural diversity and shared cultural heritage.

How was this done?

The programme's funds were used to provide grants to cultural cooperation projects in the artistic and cultural fields, including:

  • performing arts
  • plastic/visual arts
  • literature
  • heritage
  • cultural history

A panel of independent experts provide support to the programme management for the selection of projects.

Projects could fall into one of three main categories:

  • specific annual activities
  • multiannual activities
  • special cultural events
