Commission to fully fund the Creative Europe Desk in Ukraine

Creative Europe Desks are crucial advisory bodies to promote the Creative Europe in the Programme’s countries.

The European Commission has adopted an amendment to the Creative Europe Work Programme 2023 to fully cover the financing of the Creative Europe Desk in Ukraine. The extra €28 830 of support comes at a time of limited budget for the cultural sector in Ukraine.

Creative Europe Desks serve as advisory bodies in each country, playing a crucial role in promoting the opportunities offered by the programme to local organisations and individuals.

How Creative Europe Desks are financed

Each country participating in Creative Europe receives support for their local desks through the Programme, but they cover part of the desks’ budget as well.

This support is extremely important for Ukraine, as the country had significantly reduced its support for culture since the war started. The Creative Europe Desk in Ukraine helps bridge this gap and provides essential guidance and assistance to the Ukrainian cultural sector.

A continuous effort to support Ukraine’s cultural and creative sectors

This latest development builds on the continuous efforts of Creative Europe and the European Commission to support Ukraine’s cultural and creative sectors.

Another example is the special call for Ukrainian refugees and the Ukrainian Cultural and creative sectors. This call supports three consortia led by EU-Ukraine organisations that will redistribute funding for targeted actions in the Cultural field.

Furthermore, the adopted amendment reflects an increase of the funding for the Programme of €12.5 million. The increase was voted by the European Parliament in November 2022.

The funds have been divided as follows:

  • Culture strand: €3.4 million
  • MEDIA strand: €8.5 million
  • Cross-sectoral strand: €650 000

The proposal had previously received unanimous approval from the Creative Europe Committee, made up of representatives from all 27 Member States of the European Union.
