The Mediterranean Digital Media Observatory multidisciplinary consortium brings together research, fact-checking and media organisations with internationally acknowledged research work and activity in the area of disinformation in order to detect, analyse and expose emerging harmful disinformation campaigns and address their impacts in society and democracy.
The work of the Observatory will expand the regional coverage of the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) in three countries of Southeast Europe (Greece, Cyprus and Malta). These countries face similar challenges regarding disinformation campaigns which often try to polarise the EU debate around immigration and borders control issues.
Based on advanced tools and operational methodologies, the Mediterranean Digital Media Observatory will strive to detect disinformation, analyse disinformation campaigns, train and bring together professionals with different backgrounds and expertise, and empower citizens at regional, national and EU level.
The project notably intends to create media literacy activities, training material in the curricula of the leading departments related to journalism, and awareness campaigns.
The project was launched in December 2022 and will end in May 2025. It is coordinated by the Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (Greece), and brings together 8 partners from Cyprus, Malta, Greece, and France.
