Spain hosted many large scale events in 1992, notably the World Expo in Sevilla, the Barcelona Olympic games and, of course, the European Capital of Culture in Madrid. The city had a significant involvement of local authorities in the programming with the goal to showcase the culture of all parts of Spain rather than focusing solely on Madrid.
