First Dutch European Capital of Culture. 1987 brought a shift in perspective to the European Capitals of Culture initiative with the idea that it was possible to achieve long term cultural benefits for the city from the title year. This goal was achieved by working closely with cultural institutions whose activities were already connected with the goal and purposes of the cultural capital idea and which could be artistically deepened or internationalised.
