From 2000-2006, the EU supported the cultural and creative sectors through the Culture 2000 programme.

The European Commission managed support for the creative, cultural and audiovisual sectors through 2 separate programmes from 2007-2013: the Culture programme and the MEDIA programme. These 2 funding programmes were brought together as Creative Europe in 2014.

Creative Europe programme (2014-2020)

In 2014, EU support to the cultural and audiovisual sectors was consolidated into a stand-alone funding programme – the Creative Europe programme. With a budget of €1.46 billion over 7 years, the programme has helped European artists, creators and content to find more opportunities and to reach new audiences beyond national borders.

Culture programme (2007-2013)

The Culture programme was an initiative that ran from 2007-2013 with a budget of €400 million to support projects and activities designed to protect and promote cultural diversity and heritage.

MEDIA programme (2007-2013)

The MEDIA programme was an initiative that ran from 2007-2013 with a budget of €755 million to support projects and activities designed to support the development and distribution of thousands of films, as well as training activities, festivals, and promotion projects throughout the continent.

Culture 2000 programme (2000-2006)

Launched in 2000, the programme ran until 2006, with a budget of €236.4 million dedicated to promoting a common cultural area, characterised by its cultural diversity and shared cultural heritage.
