Royal Theatre Toone, Brussels (Belgium)

Puppeteers and their knigth puppets at Royal Theatre Toone

The Royal Theatre Toone defines itself as a site where European literature and history, represented by popular stories and works suitable for adult puppet theatre, are accessible to a broad audience.

As puppet theatres, where “poechenelles” (puppets) replaced actors, became places of popular entertainment, they used their satirical messages to create a space for freedom of expression during the period of oppression in former Flanders. Thus, the Royal Theatre Toone transmits and maintains not only the rod marionette art but also the associated freedom of expression.
