Seven new sites receive the European Heritage Label across Europe

The European Commission awarded the label to the sites for playing a significant role in Europe's history, culture, and the development of the Union.

More than a decade after the European Heritage Label started in 2011, independent experts from across Europe recommended these sites from a pool of sixteen sites that participating EU countries pre-selected.

The following sites received the European Heritage Label in 2023:

The award ceremony for the 2023 European Heritage Label sites takes place on 17 April 2024, in Antwerp, Belgium.

About the selection process

To earn this award, sites must meet three fundamental criteria:

  • demonstrating European significance
  • effectively communicating their European historic ties and dimension to their audiences
  • demonstrating the ability to carry out these activities

Labelled sites are also expected to actively engage in networking activities and collaboration projects  through the actions and campaigns coordinated by the EHL BUREAU, the EHL Network Secretariat co-funded under Creative Europe.

The selection process takes place every other year and is open to all EU countries, provided they have expressed their interest. Based on the recommendations of the European Panel of independent experts, the European Commission awards the European Heritage Label to a maximum of one site per participating country per year.

Sites that receive the label are subject to periodic monitoring to make sure that they maintain the criteria for which they were selected.

About the European Heritage Label action

The European Heritage Label serves the purpose of enriching people’s understanding and appreciation of the diverse heritage that EU countries share.

The European Heritage Label has also demonstrated its relevance in fostering intercultural dialogue and nurturing a sense of belonging to the European Union, with a special focus on young individuals.

This action contributes significantly to bolstering local cultural tourism, sustainable economic benefits, and community building throughout Europe.
