Shaping the built environment for everyone

Living Spaces is a peer-learning initiative that supports local and regional authorities in planning and delivering high-quality architectural policies and projects.

Between July 2023 and November 2024, the initiative facilitated peer exchanges across EU cities, regions, EU countries, and key stakeholders, focusing on effective processes and good practices.

Funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, Living Spaces was implemented by Eurocities and the Architects’ Council of Europe.

Peer-learning activities for cities and regions

Well-designed buildings and public spaces are essential for creating inclusive, sustainable, and vibrant cities and regions. They must meet the diverse needs of people today, promoting well-being, accessibility, and social connection, while respecting the planet's ecological limits. Architecture that cares for both people and the environment is vital to the quality of life in our societies now and for generations to come.

Living Spaces’ activities demonstrate that building and planning for everyone improves cohesion, attractiveness, and the sustainability of our cities and regions:

  • a catalogue of 30 good practices from across the European Union, emphasising impacts and transferability from one local context to others
  • 12 onsite peer-learning visits in European cities and regions (EU 27) that took place in 2024, allowing participants to learn from each other and from experts

A second edition of the initiative is scheduled for 2026.
